ADMARC Limited says it will continue to strengthen Malawi’s pigeon pea value chain by creating more market opportunities for farmers.

Chief Executive Officer Ben Botolo said this will be achieved through the commissioning of the Dhal Processing Plants, which will facilitate value addition and increase the tonnage of pigeon peas the Company purchases from farmers.

He made the remarks during a visit to the Liwonde Dhal Processing Plant by the Indian High Commissioner to Malawi, Amararam Gujar, in Machinga District. The visit focused on exploring ways of operationalising the facility, promoting value addition and strengthening Malawi’s pigeon pea value chain.

Botolo described the Liwonde and Luchenza Dhal Processing Plants as strategic national investments with the potential to transform pigeon pea production and processing in Malawi.

He explained that the plants, which have remained non-operational since their establishment, require specialised technical expertise to commence operations. He further highlighted the importance of collaboration with India to unlock their full potential.

“The operationalisation of the plants will contribute towards value addition, create economic opportunities and support farmers by providing a reliable market for their produce,” said Botolo.
The Indian High Commissioner to Malawi, Amararam Gujar, welcomed ADMARC’s efforts to revive the facilities and challenged Malawian farmers to increase pigeon pea production to meet growing demand in the Indian market.

Gujar said pigeon peas are an important part of India’s staple diet, creating a significant market opportunity for Malawian farmers.

He noted that India continues to require large volumes of pigeon peas and encouraged Malawi to increase production to take advantage of export opportunities.

“In the 2024/2025 farming season, Malawi exported pigeon peas worth US$74 million,” said Gujar.
Gujar also expressed commitment to supporting efforts aimed at facilitating the commissioning of the Liwonde Dhal Processing Plant.

The visit reaffirmed the strong partnership between Malawi and India and highlighted shared efforts to promote agricultural value addition, increase exports, empower farmers and unlock the full potential of Malawi’s pigeon pea industry.

ADMARC and Airtel Money Malawi have entered into a partnership that enables ADMARC and its customers to buy and sell agricultural produce using Airtel Money.

This initiative is expected to significantly reduce the use of cash in ADMARC markets across the country.

Speaking during the launch at the Trade Fair grounds in Blantyre, ADMARC Chief Executive Officer Ben Botolo said the partnership is an important step in modernising ADMARC’s operations and improving service delivery to customers.

“We are pleased to partner with Airtel Money to introduce digital payments in our markets. This will make it easier for customers to access our products and reduce the risks associated with handling cash. We believe this will improve both security and convenience for our customers and farmers,” said Botolo.

Head of Partnership Acquisition at Airtel Money, Khumbo Phiri, said the partnership will help more Malawians access secure and convenient payment services.

“This partnership gives customers and farmers a safer way to make and receive payments. People will no longer need to carry large amounts of cash, reducing the risk of theft. We are proud to support ADMARC in its journey towards digital transformation,” said Phiri.

The partnership marks another step towards a digital future for ADMARC, as the Company continues to adopt technology that improves service delivery and supports safe, efficient and convenient business transactions.

Matenje said the interface meeting had motivated the officers to continue improving service delivery, enhancing accountability and working with dedication to contribute towards ADMARC’s profitability and growth.

He added that the officers have also been engaging communities through awareness meetings and interactions with farmers to encourage them to sell their produce to ADMARC and strengthen the company’s relationship with the public.

Speaking in Mzuzu during an interface meeting with ADMARC Division Managers, Senior Operations Officers and Unit Market Officers from the northern region, Botolo urged staff to uphold commitment, professionalism and integrity in their duties to ensure the Company’s objectives are achieved.

He emphasized that ADMARC’s success depends on the dedication of its officers.

“ADMARC is focusing on agricultural production, trading and value addition to become commercially viable,” Botolo said.

He reminded officers to treat all stakeholders with respect, noting that they represent the face of the institution.

Botolo further highlighted that the Company will purchase a range of key commodities, including maize, cotton, pigeon peas, groundnuts and beans.

The Division Managers for Mzuzu and Karonga, Lawrence Kanjira and Gracious Mnjengezulu, expressed their gratitude to the CEO for engaging with staff in the northern region. They indicated that the region is prepared to purchase commodities from farmers.

Established in 1978, ADMARC continues to play a vital role in promoting Malawi’s economy by increasing the volume and quality of agricultural exports.

Women’s leadership is recognised as a powerful driver of strong institutions, innovation, and inclusive development. Across many sectors, women continue to play a vital role in advancing sustainable economic growth and social progress.

This commitment was highlighted when ADMARC Limited joined leaders and professionals from across Malawi at the 11th Annual Women in Management and Leadership Conference held in Mangochi. It was organised by the Pan African Leadership and Growth Network (PALGNET).

The conference was held under the theme “Power, Purpose and Legacy: Women Redefining Leadership at the Top in Malawi,” underscoring the growing influence of women in shaping institutions and contributing to national development.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Agnes Ndovi, Acting Director of Operations at ADMARC, emphasised the Company’s dedication to advancing women in leadership positions.

“At ADMARC Limited, we believe in the transformative power of women in leadership. Our commitment is to empower women with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to excel, driving success within the Company and creating a lasting impact in society,” she said.

The conference also highlighted the urgent need to close the gender gap in executive decision-making roles. Delivering the keynote address, Professor Dorothy Nampota, Chief Executive Officer of the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB), urged women in influential positions to invest in the education and empowerment of the girl child.

She noted that while many women excel in junior and mid-level positions, far fewer make it to senior executive tables.

“Where senior executives meet, you find fewer women, but at lower levels you see many women taking up leading roles. We need to fill this gap. Let us promote the girl child to rise to executive positions so that they can also contribute their skills towards national development,” she said.

Her remarks were echoed by Leonard Kazembe, PALGNET Regional Director, who emphasised the importance of mentorship and participation in leadership platforms as pathways to unlocking women’s full potential.

The conference also featured the Women of Substance Awards, recognising exceptional contributions by women across sectors such as agriculture, renewable energy, environment, sports, business, public service, media, and entertainment.

ADMARC’s participation in the conference reflects its ongoing commitment to promoting gender equality, strengthening leadership capacity, and ensuring that women continue to play a central role in driving organisational success and national development.

The Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Irrigation has pledged to lobby Parliament for increased budgetary allocation to ADMARC, saying inadequate funding is negatively affecting the Company’s operations.

Committee Chairperson, Hon. Anthony Kamoto, made the remarks when members of the committee toured ADMARC Limited Head Office and Limbe Depot to appreciate the Company’s operations.

“ADMARC Limited is one of the key players in the development of the country’s agriculture sector. We will give all the necessary support to ensure that the Company is able to implement its plans,” said Kamoto.

Kamoto emphasized that increased funding would enable ADMARC to improve its efficiency and better serve farmers and consumers across the country.

ADMARC Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Ben Botolo, thanked the committee for the visit and for demonstrating commitment towards supporting ADMARC Limited.

ADMARC Limited is a government-owned Company mandated to contribute to Malawi’s socio-economic development through the marketing of agricultural commodities, farm inputs and services, as well as value addition for both local and export markets.

Currently, ADMARC is involved in crop production to complement purchases from farmers. It also continues to trade in agricultural commodities while promoting value addition to enhance market competitiveness.
