ADMARC Chief Executive Officer, Ben Botolo, says one of the Company’s key priorities for the 2026/27 financial year is to strengthen its commercial viability and reposition the institution as a profitable enterprise.

Speaking in Mzuzu during an interface meeting with ADMARC Division Managers, Senior Operations Officers and Unit Market Officers from the northern region, Botolo urged staff to uphold commitment, professionalism and integrity in their duties to ensure the Company’s objectives are achieved.

He emphasized that ADMARC’s success depends on the dedication of its officers.

“ADMARC is focusing on agricultural production, trading and value addition to become commercially viable,” Botolo said.

He reminded officers to treat all stakeholders with respect, noting that they represent the face of the institution.

Botolo further highlighted that the Company will purchase a range of key commodities, including maize, cotton, pigeon peas, groundnuts and beans.

The Division Managers for Mzuzu and Karonga, Lawrence Kanjira and Gracious Mnjengezulu, expressed their gratitude to the CEO for engaging with staff in the northern region. They indicated that the region is prepared to purchase commodities from farmers.

Established in 1978, ADMARC continues to play a vital role in promoting Malawi’s economy by increasing the volume and quality of agricultural exports.

Women’s leadership is recognised as a powerful driver of strong institutions, innovation, and inclusive development. Across many sectors, women continue to play a vital role in advancing sustainable economic growth and social progress.

This commitment was highlighted when ADMARC Limited joined leaders and professionals from across Malawi at the 11th Annual Women in Management and Leadership Conference held in Mangochi. It was organised by the Pan African Leadership and Growth Network (PALGNET).

The conference was held under the theme “Power, Purpose and Legacy: Women Redefining Leadership at the Top in Malawi,” underscoring the growing influence of women in shaping institutions and contributing to national development.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Agnes Ndovi, Acting Director of Operations at ADMARC, emphasised the Company’s dedication to advancing women in leadership positions.

“At ADMARC Limited, we believe in the transformative power of women in leadership. Our commitment is to empower women with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to excel, driving success within the Company and creating a lasting impact in society,” she said.

The conference also highlighted the urgent need to close the gender gap in executive decision-making roles. Delivering the keynote address, Professor Dorothy Nampota, Chief Executive Officer of the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB), urged women in influential positions to invest in the education and empowerment of the girl child.

She noted that while many women excel in junior and mid-level positions, far fewer make it to senior executive tables.

“Where senior executives meet, you find fewer women, but at lower levels you see many women taking up leading roles. We need to fill this gap. Let us promote the girl child to rise to executive positions so that they can also contribute their skills towards national development,” she said.

Her remarks were echoed by Leonard Kazembe, PALGNET Regional Director, who emphasised the importance of mentorship and participation in leadership platforms as pathways to unlocking women’s full potential.

The conference also featured the Women of Substance Awards, recognising exceptional contributions by women across sectors such as agriculture, renewable energy, environment, sports, business, public service, media, and entertainment.

ADMARC’s participation in the conference reflects its ongoing commitment to promoting gender equality, strengthening leadership capacity, and ensuring that women continue to play a central role in driving organisational success and national development.

The Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Irrigation has pledged to lobby Parliament for increased budgetary allocation to ADMARC, saying inadequate funding is negatively affecting the Company’s operations.

Committee Chairperson, Hon. Anthony Kamoto, made the remarks when members of the committee toured ADMARC Limited Head Office and Limbe Depot to appreciate the Company’s operations.

“ADMARC Limited is one of the key players in the development of the country’s agriculture sector. We will give all the necessary support to ensure that the Company is able to implement its plans,” said Kamoto.

Kamoto emphasized that increased funding would enable ADMARC to improve its efficiency and better serve farmers and consumers across the country.

ADMARC Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Ben Botolo, thanked the committee for the visit and for demonstrating commitment towards supporting ADMARC Limited.

ADMARC Limited is a government-owned Company mandated to contribute to Malawi’s socio-economic development through the marketing of agricultural commodities, farm inputs and services, as well as value addition for both local and export markets.

Currently, ADMARC is involved in crop production to complement purchases from farmers. It also continues to trade in agricultural commodities while promoting value addition to enhance market competitiveness.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development has pledged its continued support to ADMARC Limited to ensure that it effectively fulfills its mandate.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Honourable Thoko Tembo, MP, made the remarks during a visit to ADMARC Limited’s Limbe Depot and the dhal processing plant in Luchenza.

Tembo said improved operations at ADMARC would greatly benefit farmers by providing a reliable market for their produce, stabilising prices, and improving livelihoods.

“ADMARC has the infrastructure and capacity to be transformed into a competitive public export enterprise capable of generating the much-needed forex,” he said.

Speaking on the dhal processing plant in Luchenza, the Deputy Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that the facility becomes fully operational for the benefit of the nation.

He said once operations commence, the plant will produce locally processed dhal for both domestic consumption and export markets, in line with the government’s agenda of value addition and economic growth.

ADMARC Limited’s Marketing Manager, Agness Ndovi, who accompanied the delegation, said the visit had motivated management and staff.

New ADMARC Board Chair Gray Nyandule Phiri has pledged to support increased production to enhance the Company’s contribution to national food security.

Phiri made the remarks during a recent board orientation held at ADMARC Limited’s Head Office in Blantyre.

“It’s an honor to be appointed as Board chair of ADMARC Limited. The experience I have accumulated over the years has prepared me to contribute meaningfully to the growth of this institution. We want to make sure that as a Company, we are able to fulfil our mandate,” he said.

He noted that ADMARC once played a central role in food security, supported by warehousing capacity of over 400,000 metric tonnes, which in the past was fully utilised.

“However, it is sad that currently we have empty warehouses. In this regard, restoring stock levels will be a key priority during my tenure,” he said.

He emphasized that within the first two years, it is his wish that ADMARC’s market share will reach 15 percent.

In the short term, Phiri said ADMARC will focus on securing capital to buy and sell commodities in good time, while also expanding into agricultural input trading such as fertilizers, seeds and pesticides.

He called on ADMARC management and staff to embrace accountability and performance-based targets, stressing that institutional revival depends on discipline and dedication.

Phiri said the goal of the board is to leave ADMARC fully operational and repositioned as a leader in commodity trading, capable of supporting both farmers and national food security.

Other board members are: Hilda Ntiya, Senior Chief Moffat Champiti, Grena Gambatula, Constance Mwanyongo, Grey Kapute and Elias Nyangulu.

ADMARC Limited says working with agricultural researchers and experts will be central to improving cotton productivity.

The Company’s CEO, Ben Botolo, said this during his visit to Ngabu ginnery, where the ginning process is currently underway.

For the 2024/2025 buying season, ADMARC purchased 1,122 metric tonnes of cotton, below the 10,000 MT target due to low production volumes from farmers.

“We are making progress, but we need to do more to ensure we have enough cotton for both the local and international markets. Collaboration with research experts will help us improve productivity,” Botolo said.

He also said ADMARC is exploring its own cotton production to supplement what farmers produce. “This will not affect farmers’ markets with ADMARC, the goal is to ensure enough stock for local and international markets and for value addition,” he explained.

“Value addition will be a focus for ADMARC to strengthen the cotton value chain and maximise returns. Moving from selling cotton lint to manufacturing finished products will create jobs and support economic development,” he said.

He therefore urged farmers to increase cotton production to meet growing demand.

Locally, cotton supports agro-processing industries, including cooking oil and other products. Internationally, Malawian cotton has been exported to countries such as France and Switzerland.

“Malawi has more to offer the world than just raw produce, we are ready to tell our story through value.” That was the bold message from ADMARC Limited CEO Daniel Makata, who was one of the panelists at this year’s Institute of Marketing in Malawi (IMM) Annual Conference.

Joining a distinguished panel alongside Dr. Vera Kamtukule and Wilkins Mijiga, Mr. Makata contributed to a dynamic conversation on how marketers can amplify Malawi’s charm on the global stage.

His message was clear: ADMARC is undergoing a strategic transformation, shifting from simply selling agricultural products to investing in value addition.

He explained that the initiative seeks to redefine ADMARC Limited’s role in Malawi’s economy by improving the quality and competitiveness of local produce, opening new revenue opportunities, and showcasing the country’s rich agricultural heritage on the global stage.

“We are not just exporting crops,” Makata emphasized. “We are exporting stories, culture, and innovation.”

The panel sparked vibrant dialogue between leaders from both public and private sectors, underscoring the importance of strategic storytelling, creative branding, and collaborative partnerships in elevating Malawi’s image.

ADMARC remains deeply committed to driving agricultural productivity and commercialization, while fostering sustainable partnerships that fuel inclusive growth. As Mr. Makata concluded, “As we continue to innovate, we are proud to be part of the movement that’s redefining Malawi’s place on the global stage.”

As part of Mother’s Day celebrations, ADMARC Limited has distributed Thanzi Maize Flour and rice worth about K4 million to grandmothers in Chikwawa District, one of the districts hit by food shortages.

The event, held in Chikwawa, brought smiles and relief to over 100 grandmothers, many of whom continue to face food insecurity. This comes at a time when the 2025 Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) report indicates that 22 percent of Malawi’s population will be unable to meet their annual food needs.

Speaking during the distribution, Theresa Chapulapula, ADMARC Limited’s spokesperson, emphasized the vital role women play at both household and community levels.

“We cannot talk about the success of ADMARC Limited’s activities without mentioning our mothers,” she said. “These are women who not only feed their families but are also key stakeholders in our operations, as farmers, as customers, and as leaders in their communities. That is why today, we celebrate them.”

She also indicated that the event was not only about the distribution of food, but also about recognition and appreciation.

“This Mother’s Day, we wanted to go beyond celebration. We wanted to stand with our grandmothers in Chikwawa, to say thank you, and to remind them that ADMARC values them.”

Village Headman Layimoni praised the gesture, describing it as timely especially in light of the growing food crisis.

“We did not know how we would celebrate Mother’s Day because we had no food. But with this support, we will now celebrate with joy and a meal. I also encourage my fellow farmers to continue supporting ADMARC by selling to and buying from them, because they are the ones who stand with us in times of need,” she said.

ADMARC Limited is mandated to support macro-economic development through the marketing and value addition of agricultural commodities for both local and export markets. It also implements key government policies on food security and price stabilisation, while providing accessible markets for smallholder farmers.
